OOOPS
Got a little setback this weekend. I mentioned I got the epoxy priming done on the main body, doors, trunk lid and some other small parts. I also mentioned that the main body looked great and it still does. But I had leaned the doors and trunk up against stuff to take less space and it appears the paint wasn't dry enough when I did it so when I went to pick them up in install them this week the paint was stuck to what they were leaning against and sitting on. Its makes them look not so good but in actuality it makes no difference because they have to be sanded anyway. And the areas where the paint pulled off willed get covered with the next high build primer coat. Plus the doors have a few runs in them that will need sanding out before proceeding on them. That's all really no big deal but my other more challenging problem is the trunk lid won't go on right.
I don't know if I mentioned previously but the hinges are not marked in any way to know exactly how to mount them so I put them in how I thought they should go. I was wrong so I need to unweld them and re-install them. Now that I see why they aren't right I know what to do to fix them but its just going to cost a couple days to fix. I'm setting that asside and am currently going to work on getting the fenders and hood primed and installed.
I have started to work on the drivers fender and this is the one with the rusted through spot on the lower rear of the fender, right in front of the door. I have a patch I bought for it so I cut the rust spot out and got the patch to fit and welded it in. It was difficult to determine how much of the patch to use and exactly where the old fender needed to be cut but I did get it close and my welder was able to fix where it was off a little bit. Just needs some filler now and to strip the old paint of the fender and prime it. I also have to plug weld the holes where the old Malibu logo was mounted as Lee doesn't want it replaced. That's easy though. I also have to cut holes where it mounts to the underside of the frame because the patch didn't include them nor did it include the mounting bracket for the inner fender. That I unwelded from the old fender and will mount to the new one tomorrow.
Here's the patch welded in. Came out great!
Tomorrow I'm planning to test install the passenger fender(brand new) and then remove and try to get both primered. Then install them and the header panel in a mockup fashion.
If that goes well I'll get a mexican and go get the new hood from storage and prime and mount that. At that point I will go back to the trunk and remove and remount the hinges.
