Priming this weekend
The weather turned out to be kind of ok this weekend to I spent the time getting the first primer coats on from the tail up to the cowl. This is black epoxy primer which is what is needed when you have no paint on the car because I stipped it all off.
Thats the before, this is the after.
If you like black, this is the car for you!
Came out pretty good. Liz had to help me keeping the hose out of the paint and she only got her butt in it once so that was good. This is why I need my Mexican before I can do the final coats!
The trunk, doors and header panel are also painted and my next step is the assemble them onto the car. Then I need to sand paint and attach the two fenders and hood, them the car is all back together. From there the hard part begins. I have to sand the epoxy a little bit then apply 3 or three coats of high build grey primer and a guide coat. This primer will get block sanded to smooth out the smaller dents and imperfections that were too small to fill with the body filler. Now the the primer is on its easier to see where these imperfections are and I am pleased that it won't be too bad of a job to get them out. I may take a couple of times sanding and priming to get them all out though.
Before I do that though the drivers side fender has some major repair work to do. It has a rusted through area at the bottom rear of the fender that needs a lot of work. I have a patch for it but there is bracing behind where the patch goes so I am trying to figure out how to cut out the old fender without damaging the bracing. Then there is a bracket attached tot he old fender that is not on the patch so I have to figure out how to either get that off and weld to the new patched fender or make my own bracket. Probably the latter is easier.
I am pretty pleased how the primer came out but there is a lot of dust in it which is not a problem at this point because it must be sanded anyway. However, it makes it pretty clear that I will need to build some type of contraption to keep the dust out of the final coats. My neighber just told me the pine dust season will start here in a couple weeks and last 6 weeks. I had forgotten about that and believe is may impact my schedule some....maybe.
