UPDATE:
I just realized that the side mirrors will be CHROME. I am not sure that I could successfully paint them black...but I could try I guess. The big question is to get the paint to stick.
I haven't been posting much here for various reasons but I am nearing the end of the paint work finally. The paint is much better now but not perfect, but I am happy with is and believe I have done the best I can with it. These pics are not to show the final paint work but to review the final trim project of making some of the chrome trim black as discussed previously.
My neighbor is not a fan of the changes I am about to make. He suggested before I do it that I review it one more time as this cannot be undone.
Please think about this carefully and make sure this is what we want. I realize this is not my neighbors car and he has no say but he is a car fanatic so I usually do at least listen to him.
1ST:
Look at this carefully. We discussed making the roor rail trim black. This is not such a good pic but this trim goes accross the edge of the roof and then down to join the bottom of the window on the front and rear. So where it goes down at the rear you cannot see in the pic but it goes down to touch the botton of the rear window and in the front you can see where it goes down in from of the door.
So that would be black and just below it there is a chrome piece going accross the roof between the roof and the top of the windows and then all the other chrome parts of the window you can see that completely surround the windows. These parts I do not feel I can change to black. Has we discissed this much earlier I may have been able to get them all powder coated buy taking them all apart before assembly but that would have been way too much time and money.
So in summay, I'm can only do the top roof rail in black. plus the door handle and lock, the rest will stay chrome.
2ND:
On the grill, I can make the chrome between the two inner headlights black. At this point I cannot, or won't remove the headlight bezels and change the chrome trim around them to black.
Also remember the bumper will be chrome, I cannot change this.
3RD:
Heres the rear of my car how it looks as designed.
On the rear panel there are two chrome strips traversing arcoss between the tail lights. I had volunteered to paint these black. These would be relatively easy but as you can see the tail lights have matching chrome trim that mates up to these two strips. Your car has two rows of holes accross the rear where the trim attaches. Had I planned this earlier I could have weled in the two rows of holes and eliminated the trim all together but I didn't think of that so its too late now. I can still paint the two trim piece black but you can see from the pics that the tail light lenses have matching chrome trim on them. I had forgotten this. I can probably paint them black if I am careful or just leave them chrome. You pick.
Also remember the bumper will be chrome..I cannot change this.
Also, not shown in the pic is the trunk lock which can be black.
4TH:
The trim around the rear window. I was going to paint this black. See my car above.
5TH:
Same on the front window. I can remove the chrome piece at the bottom of the window...I think, without taking the fenders off. I will not take the fenders off at this point. I am so close to finishing this car I just cannt bear to do that. But If I can get it out I can paint it and all the other from window trim black.
6TH:
We have already eliminated the wheel well trim and the side trim pieces and the side MALIBU logo pieces from the fenders. There will be a CHEVELLE logo on the front header panel and the rear panel between the two trim pieces already discussed. These I cannot make black but they could be taken to a powder coater by you if you want.
So the concern is having all the discussed pieces black but still being a lot of chrome trim aound the side windows that I cannot do anything about. I think I can do the black as planned but be aware that it will be black paint, not powdercoat, and will be more apt to chip then powdercoat but could be touched up with a brush if neccessary. As I am writing this I am thinking that the lower windshield trim shown in the pic above may be a problem painting black. This is because the wipers will rub over this piece when turned on or off and will probably scratch is or even peel the paint off fairly easily.
Black paint over chrome followed with a coat of clearcoat should hold up fairly well but is no where near as durable as powdercoat. At this point I just don't want to go through the time and effort to do powdercoat.
So the question I would like you to consider is to just make absolutely sure we have a good plan and you think you will like it.
I will do it either way for you the best I can. I know its hard to envision some of this from the pics but we have to do what we have to do. Take a careful look and let me know again and I'll get started....or not.
